With assorted rocks and minerals as our guides, this interactive online workshop combines close sensory observation of geological specimens with the act of mindful drawing. Each of the many drawings we do presents a different way of seeing and marking, working across specimens and techniques. Each participant gets a kit of diverse geological specimens and all art materials for the session, including a 66-color Daniel Smith watercolor sampler with mineral pigments, drawing tools and materials, ample watercolor paper, brushes, and more. The workshop is fully live via Zoom, and no prior drawing experience is required.

We work in a range of wet and dry drawing materials and easily-accessible techniques, investigating each stone’s qualities in close and intricate detail. We generate a series of small mixed-media drawings that explore perception of line, form, structure, color, and texture, through geological models. You are welcome to augment the process by also drawing favorite specimens from your own rock collection, as a way to see more deeply into their structure and composition.

Whether you’re an experienced artist or are just starting out, this is an opportunity to create intimate artworks that reflect the rich natural environment that surrounds us. No previous drawing experience is required, just a curiosity about exploring natural geological forms and diverse materials through close observation and engaged markmaking.

These interactive online workshops are presented via Zoom, and best experienced on a laptop or computer monitor with a large screen and webcam. Please download the free Zoom app on to your computer (www.zoom.us) prior to your first class. Payment is through the link below (PayPal) or personal check (please email me if paying by check).

Class price includes a materials packet sent to US participants via Priority Mail. If you are outside the US, regretfully I cannot post, but will offer a reduced workshop fee and will send you a materials list - please contact me directly and I will reserve your spot. Each participant will also receive invitations to online drawing sessions for workshop alumni only.

Workshops require a 3-person minimum; if the minimum is not met seven days prior to the class, your tuition will be refunded.

Please be in touch if you have any questions - I look forward to drawing with you soon.
